We've found some customers misunderstand how Correspond, our web-based
email client, handles their email messages. Several times, we've heard
from customers who believe Correspond is "taking" their email away from
Outlook or whatever client they prefer to use. That's not the case.
Correspond is simply a means of accessing messages through a standard web
browser (like Internet Explorer), allowing you to read or send email from
any computer with Internet access -- even when you aren't using your own
computer, you can check and send email!
When you use Correspond, your email messages stay on our server until you
delete them permanently. (More on that in a moment.) That's a major
difference between Correspond and POP email clients like Outlook or
Netscape, which typically are configured to remove messages from the
server, download them to your local disk and store them there.
If you access messages in Correspond, the server marks them as "read" and
they won't be "seen" by Outlook or other clients unless you Export them
from Correspond back to the "unread" directory of the server. This is what
causes some people to believe Correspond has prevented Outlook from
getting their messages.
To export messages, select the ones you want to access with your POP
client in your inbox (or other directory) and click the "Export" button,
confirm your choice, then log out of Correspond. Those messages may then
be accessed through Outlook or another POP client.
Another question we frequently receive about Correspond concerns deleting
messages. Often, customers believe they have deleted messages from the
server when in fact they have not. This sometimes leads to them exceeding
their disk space allocation, which can lead
to additional monthly charges.
In Correspond, as in most POP clients, moving a message to the Trash
doesn't actually erase it. Messages in the trash remain on the server
until they're deleted from the trash folder. This precaution reduces the
risk of accidentally deleting messages you don't mean to erase.
To make sure messages don't pile up in your trash you can set your
Correspond preferences to automatically remove messages that have been in
the trash for a certain amount of time. Also, you can manually delete
files from your trash at any time, clearing space on the server and
reducing your disk usage.
